Wolmer's Preparatory School welcomed its first students on September 16, 1941, when it opened as a department of Wolmer's Girls' School. This preparatory department, which was initially housed in a single classroom, was the brainchild of Mrs. Evelyn Skempton, the principal of the Girl's School at the time.
It served as an important feeder for Wolmer's Girls' School, with most of the students making a seamless transition from one to the other. In 1957, when the Government changed the age for admissions to high school to 11 years old, the two lowest forms which constituted the preparatory department moved from the high school to the independent Wolmer's preparatory department, which would later incorporate the preparatory department of the Boys' School and become the very successful third member of the Wolmer's group of schools.
In the Christmas term of 1944, the preparatory department moved from a concrete nog building at Wolmer's Girls' School into new classrooms in a specially designed building on the corner of Marescaux Road and North Race Course (now National Heroes' Circle), then later to Connolley Avenue as Wolmer's Preparatory School. The school has grown steadily over the years, adjusting to the changing educational landscape in Jamaica while continuing to achieve the highest standards of development and achievement for its pupils.
